People who have difficulties converting sound into words and vice versa are, in the National Danish Dyslexia Test, labelled with the colour red. Nymann questions this colour coding, and wonders what it means for our self-understanding when we are categorised with a colour that signals ‘danger’ and ‘warning’? The sculpture is a 3D scan of a child’s hand and functions both as a sculptural element and interactive seating spot. The work was inspired by Nymann’s extensive research into the history of dyslexia in Denmark, where parallels were drawn to physical traits such as “rubber fingers,” as described in the alternative practitioner Kaare P. Johansen’s essay It’s in the Fingers (Politiken, 2002). These outdated perceptions and alternative treatments, which Nymann also personally experienced as a child, often reinforced feelings of inadequacy. The installation on Roskilde Festival’s Gloria Stage, surrounded by green furniture and slogan posters, reflect both historical misunderstandings and a forward-looking, positive approach to dyslexia, emphasizing strengths and community. On the surrounding seating, you will find Legislative proposal: Dyslexics with pride, an artistic manifesto, written as a Danish legislative proposal. The proposals call for changing the terms and symbols that authorities and educational institutions use about people with dyslexia, as well as how the school system should be changed to better support dyslexia in literacy education. One proposal is to move away from the Danish term “word-blindness.” Many other countries use the term dyslexia, which the artist herself also uses. At the same time, there is a collective call for all of us: to walk the green path together, recognising our differences as individuals and embracing the unique strengths they bring. The project brings these perspectives into dialogue, exploring both what we have in common and where our experiences differ. Through research, expert exchange and lived experience, knowledge and perspectives meet across artistic, educational and dyslexia communities. The photographs show the artist holding a sign for each day of the week, symbolically marking dyslexia awareness and ending with the powerful message: We are proud dyslexics. The green colour refers to the National Dyslexia Test in Denmark, where a person with dyslexia is given the colour red based on a red, yellow, green division. This film started as a sound recording, made in 2019, of the West Indies Warehouse building singing. The phenomenon of the building singing happens in special weather conditions where wind enters the building, causing it to resonate and become its own instrument playing in several flute-like tonalities. In the 18th century, the Schimmelmann family had become Denmark’s richest family due to sugar imports from the Danish West Indies. Sitting by a piano at The Odd Fellow Palace, pianist Ben Besiakov improvises in direct response to the recording of the sound sung by the West India Warehouse building. Ben Besiakov’s grandfather was Victor Cornelin. Victor Cornelin was brought from the Danish West Indies to Copenhagen to be exhibited at the 1905 human exhibition in Tivoli. The Royal Vajsenhus In 1905 The Royal Vajsenhus was an orphanage and after the human exhibition in Tivoli Victor Cornelin was sent to school in this very building. Today The Royal Vajsenhus is a primary school. In the film a girl reads aloud from a contemporary school book for high school history classes. From the book, she reads a selection of texts. A group of people reacted to a casting call titled experiment about dance and loneliness during lockdown 2021. They were invited to the fictional Red Room Institute that hosted something between a dance audition, a self-help radio show, and a performance for a one-person audience. This turned into Use It Well, where the spectator is surrounded by a massive soundscape of bodies. The soundscape oscillates between inner comments and attempts of reaching out, verbal and nonverbal communication, loneliness and togetherness. By leaving the visual space empty for the audience to fill in the blanks, Use It Well wants to reconfigure ideas of presence and absence, intimacy and distance, and how we construct meaning when something is withheld from us.
